Loch Ness Wellington Bomber Program
Tuesday, March 5 @ 3:30pm
On New Year’s Eve, 1940, a twin-engine Wellington bomber, a veteran of 14 combat missions over enemy territory in Europe, was on a training mission out of Lossiemouth, Scotland, when it lost power in one of its engines. The pilot spotted a large waterway below and ditched the plane at Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. Decades later, following several years of deepwater remote sensing investigations, the bomber was raised in September 1985. This free program will trace the history of the British aircraft and its missions, tell about the sunken aircraft’s recovery and restoration, and interpret the airplane’s discovery in the context of the search for the legendary “Nessie”. Presented by Joseph W. Zarzynski, RPA (Register of Professional Archaeologists), an underwater archaeologist who was part of the recovery operation.
