Elyse Brady reported to Historic City News that the St. Augustine Art Association will unveil the new “TOUCH St. Augustine Braille Trail” on Thursday, October 9th, beginning with a brief ceremony at the Pedro Menendez statue at the Lightner Museum gardens.
St Augustine Art Association graphic designer, Liesl Swogger, created the TOUCH St. Augustine Braille Trail markers. She told reporters that “TOUCH” stands for Tactile Orientation for Understanding Creativity and History.
After the 3:00 p.m. ceremony, the celebration continues with a trolley tour around the Plaza to view the Braille Trail’s markers at five historic statues in downtown St. Augustine.
The tour will conclude with a reception and Art Garden groundbreaking at the St. Augustine Art Association, where the 13th Annual Tactile Art Show, an exhibit of touchable art, is on display for “Art beyond Sight” Awareness Month.
This 450th public art accessibility project for the blind was developed by the St. Augustine Art Association in partnership with Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, the City of St. Augustine, Flagler College and the Cathedral Basilica through grants from the Community Foundation Crisp-Ellert Fund and Beta Sigma Phi.
