According to an incident report received by Historic City News Sunday, shortly before 1:00 p.m. Saturday, deputies responded to the scene of the retention pond after receiving a call reporting the possibility of a vehicle crash.
After confirming the existence of the vehicle in the retention pond, Sheriff’s Dive Team members were assembled to go into the water and recover Carriere’s body.
St Johns County Sheriff’s Commander, Charles E. Mulligan, told local reporters that speed and failure to negotiate a curve are factors in the crash, although the investigation is continuing to determine a timeline of the events.
The preliminary cause of death will not be known until after completion of a post-mortem examination by the District 23 Medical Examiner’s Office.
