Heather Neville, Director of Velo Fest, announced to Historic City News the launch of a new and fun education program kicking off today. “Don’t Be a Salmon” will focus on helping all road users know which way to ride their bicycle, which is with the flow of traffic, even when on a sidewalk.
Nearly 50% of all collisions are attributed to failure to yield properly. The “Don’t Be a Salmon” community initiative will be using coffee cup sleeves, stickers, PSA ads, and direct-to-cycling-offenders post cards as part of this full assault campaign.
“Did you know if you are riding your bicycle on a sidewalk you are a pedestrian?” Neville asked. “Did you know anytime you step foot out of a car or off of a pedal, and onto the ground, you are a pedestrian? It’s time we work together and be more aware, and more visible road users.”
With that in mind, Velo Fest will host its first annual Corporate 5k Challenge; focusing on pedestrian issues while getting a little exercise. Neville says #LetsGetPedestrian will encourage businesses, groups, municipalities, and individuals to accept the challenge of being more pedestrian aware and become better, safer road users.
“So find some friends, or foes, and get signed up,” Neville said. “There will be plenty of quirky surprises in store for you September 25, 2014, at the St. Augustine Outlet Mall.”
