On Saturday, April 26th, the City of St Augustine’s public works department and Street Tree Advisory Committee are inviting all Historic City News readers to join them in celebration of Earth Day 2014.
This weekend’s activities will focus on environmental education and sustainability; including topics like composting, beneficial insects, bees, organic gardening, rain barrels, native plants, invasive plant identification, local wildlife and marine life, watershed protection and resource conservation.
“A big part of any Earth Day is the promotion of recycling,” according to Paul Williamson, Director of Public Affairs. “The city will be collecting some items whose disposal can prove to be a challenge — such as electronics and used cooking oil.”
If you are able to attend, activities will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at R. B. Hunt Elementary School; located at 125 Magnolia Drive in St Augustine. The event is free of charge and open to the public.
There will be exhibits from several non-profit and government agencies; and, with the help of Advanced Disposal, free document shredding will be available — with a three-box limit per household.
The city will have giveaways and information on a number of programs including stormwater, FOG (fats, oils and grease), and recycling; as well as food and live music.
