Commemorating the end of the 2nd Seminole War

Historic City News readers are invited to witness the reenactment of the termination of hostilities between the Seminole Indians and US Army Troops in Florida after seven years of fighting during the 2nd Seminole War.

This Saturday, August 23rd, displays in front of St. Francis Barracks, 82 Marine Street, St. Augustine will be open, beginning at 9:30 am; followed by parade formation at 10:00 am.

50 re-enactors in period uniform will re-trace the final route of a dramatic parade; escorting the remains of soldiers and officers that were collected from temporary graves on Florida’s battlefields for interment under the three pyramids in what is now St. Augustine National Cemetery.

The original parade through the town of St. Augustine occurred on August 15, 1842.

The parade will form at 10:00, with cannon fire at 10:30, announcing the march from the Barracks to the gardens. The ceremony will feature remarks by distinguished military and civilian representatives with traditional military honors.

There is no admission charged to the event; however, there is limited parking and audience space available, so plan ahead. The ceremonies will conclude at 12:00 noon. This is an outdoor event — sunscreen and water are essentials to bring along.
