Florida Department of Transportation Public Information Director, Gina Busscher, had “good news” for Historic City News readers who travel the north US-1 corridor between St Johns and Duval County.<!–more–>
An overpass being built for CR-210 traffic, over US-1 and the adjacent Florida East Coast Railroad, is scheduled to open to traffic beginning tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. CR-210, on both sides of US-1, has been realigned for a total distance of 1.3 miles.
Growth at Nocatee on the east side of US-1 and Twin Creeks on the west side, and impending traffic congestion, contributed towards the project being prioritized by the North Florida Transportation Planning Organization. Although driver safety and the development on both sides of US-1 are factors in building the overpass, Busscher said FDOT expects to see a reduction in traffic conflicts at CR-210 and US-1 as well as at the FEC railroad crossing.
The CR-210 overpass coordinates with a separate project by Nocatee to modify an existing retention pond located between the new CR-210 and Palm Valley Road, and construction of a new St. Johns County Kindergarten – 8th grade school being built at the corner of Greenleaf Drive and CR-210 on the east end of the project. A 10-foot sidewalk on Palm Valley Road will be built and new traffic signals will be installed at both ends of the new CR-210 alignment.
- The CR-210 overpass will be two lanes
- The existing traffic signal at US-1 and the current CR-210 will remain
- A new driveway will be built connecting to the existing westbound lane of CR-210
- A pipe was installed under the embankment along the existing Old Dixie Highway
The $10 million traffic improvement project began in late March with clearing of trees and brush to accommodate the new alignment. The project, including design, was expected to last 550 contract days; and is scheduled to be complete by later this month.
St. Johns County is the owner of CR-210 and will maintain the new roadway, along with the existing segment of CR-210.
- B. Coxwell Contracting Inc., of Jacksonville is the main contractor.
- The overpass will be built by Leware Construction Company of Leesburg.
- GAI Consultants of Jacksonville is project designer.
- HNTB of Jacksonville is overseeing the construction for the Florida Department of Transportation using federal funding.
