Historic City News received word from Commander Charles E. Mulligan this morning that when four St Johns County deputies responded to a domestic violence call in the 8300 block of Colee Cove Road around 10:30 p.m. last night, they were met by a woman outside of her residence who reported that she was the victim of abuse.
One of the deputies stayed with the woman, while three others went to the residence to interview the male occupant.
According to Media Relations Officer Kevin Kelshaw, the preliminary investigation has revealed that during a confrontation between the man and the deputies, the man reached under a bed where weapons were believed to be stored.
Two of the deputies shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The area was secured while deputies obtained a search warrant to proceed with a search of the premises. Investigators and Crime Scene Technicians will continue to work through the morning hours processing the scene.
The names of the deputies involved and the identity of the man killed in the incident will be released later today, according to Mulligan who updated Historic City News at about 3:30 a.m.
The two deputies have been placed on Administrative Leave which is standard protocol.
