Free admission to Castillo de San Marcos

Historic City News readers will want to stop by the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument on Monday when admission will be waived to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. national holiday.

In addition activities at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial on the National Mall, which opened in 2011, there are other opportunities to actually walk in the civil rights leader’s footsteps at Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Georgia, Selma-to-Montgomery National Historic Trail in Alabama, or the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.; just a few of the many national parks that have direct ties to Dr. King or the Civil Rights movement.

“Dr. King’s story, and those of so many others whose efforts changed our country, are preserved in the national parks — places where history happened,” Superintendent Gordie Wilson told local new reporters. “I hope every American can take advantage of the upcoming fee-free holiday and visit their parks to experience their history firsthand.”

The National Park Service also will waive admission fees on eight other days in 2014 — President’s Day Weekend (Feb. 15-17), National Park Week’s Opening Weekend (April 19-20), National Park Service’s 98th Birthday (Aug. 25), National Public Lands Day (Sept. 27), and Veterans Day (Nov. 11).
