Historic City News editor Michael Gold received an e-mail from the Executive Office of Florida Governor Rick Scott this afternoon; relaying great news for St Augustine and St Johns County residents and businesses.
According to preliminary estimates released by Visit Florida, nearly 95 million visitors came to Florida in 2013 — exceeding the previous high of 91.5 million achieved in 2012.
“We are excited to announce today that Florida has experienced a third, consecutive record-year for tourism,” Governor Scott wrote. “The number of direct, travel-related jobs in Florida was also at a record high.”
Scott explained to Historic City News that more visitors to the Sunshine State, especially in communities like St Augustine where tourism is the major economic driver, directly translate into more jobs for Florida families.
“Over a million Floridians were employed in the tourism industry in 2013.” According to the governor, every 85 visitors to Florida, equal one job in our state.
“I have recommended record investments for Visit Florida, to ensure we continue to attract even more visitors and grow more jobs for Florida families,” Scott told Gold in the e-mail.
