At about 1:30 a.m. this morning, 43-year-old Aaron Brinson Ray, who had lived at 2655 Race Track Rd, with his wife Amanda since 2007, was shot and killed by two deputy sheriffs who were responding to a domestic disturbance call at his residence.
Kevin Kelshaw, Media Relations Officer for the St Johns County Sheriff’s Office, has updated Historic City News reporters on new details. According to Kelshaw, the deputies dispatched to the scene were informed that an aggravated battery had occurred and that shots had been fired.
The female complainant told deputies that she believed her attacker had barricaded himself inside the residence and was still armed. Members of the Sheriff’s Crisis Negotiation Team as well as SWAT Team members responded to the residence.
In May of this year, Fifth Third Bank began foreclosure proceedings against Ray’s home. July 11, Ray and his wife filed a motion to have the complaint dismissed, but the court has not acted on that motion according to clerk records.
A temporary domestic violence injunction was placed against Ray in 2010. It was dismissed later that year. Then, in 2011, Ray was arrest and charged with domestic violence battery. He was released on $1,500 bond, which was returned to him by the court when the State Attorney declined to prosecute.
While establishing a perimeter, SWAT members Deputy Jason Kroul and Corporal Shawn Emert, encountered Ray on the premises. According to the latest report, Ray was armed and refused the orders of the deputies to drop his weapon. The deputies fatally shot Ray. Although they attempted to render aid before emergency medical personnel arrived, Ray died at the scene.
