Margaret C. Rocker
St. Augustine
Dear Editor:
We have heard why not to vote for Nancy Shaver, but I would like you to consider why Nancy Shaver should serve as our mayor.
I met Nancy and her husband, Sean, soon after they arrived in St Augustine in 2009. During Sean’s final illness, she gave him love, strength and compassion, all the while continuing her demanding career.
Yes, she is relatively new to St. Augustine — but I assure you she has learned this city. Her ability to research issues is greater than that of many lifelong residents. I could list many, but will mention three:
■ The misguided attempt to permit a “coral farm” on Riberia Pointe
■ The actual cost of the Mumford and Picasso events
■ The lack of attention to the streets and waterlines
She shared that research with citizens of St. Augustine, making all better informed.
In my career in the financial services industry, I worked with many smart, successful people, and Nancy is one of the brightest people I have ever met. She has an inquisitive mind and knows how to research and analyze data; presenting options for solutions to problems. Her private sector experience is a positive, bringing new perspective to the issues facing the city.
Yes, she owns a cottage in Maine. And, yes, she supports the arts through purchases and service on museum boards.
She will be a mayor who listens to the citizens of St. Augustine; working to set policy, maintaining quality of life and preserving the essence of this beautiful city.
And that is “Why Nancy Shaver”.
