Sixteen members of the Florida Army National Guard’s 107th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment in St Augustine will deploy to Guantanamo Bay in support of Operation Enduring Freedom for a nine-month mission.
A deployment ceremony for the Guardsmen, which will include families, friends, dignitaries and military leaders from the Florida National Guard, will commence at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 10th, at the Mark Lance National Guard Armory, located at 190 San Marco Avenue.
During this deployment, the unit will be performing a mission similar to the one they performed in 2009-2010, when they provided all levels of public affairs support to Joint Task Force Guantanamo.
The 107th was responsible for publication of “The Wire” — a weekly internal newsletter, and kept the task force public and internal websites updated.
Soldiers also facilitated weekly U.S. and international media representatives visiting Joint Task Force Guantanamo’s detention facilities. The primary mission there is to conduct safe, humane, legal and transparent care and custody of detainees.
