Last Monday, March 17, 2014, Historic City News learned that St Augustine native, 57-year-old David Allen Wehking, passed away; surrounded by his family at his home east of Charleston’s Cooper River in Mt. Pleasant, SC.
“Super Dave” was a member of the St Augustine High School Class of 1974. He attended Cathedral Parish School and St Joseph Academy. He will always be remembered for his quick wit, strong faith, and never ending positive attitude for whatever life threw his way.
After graduation, he served as an Air Traffic Controller in the U.S. Army, and later, as a civilian, with the Federal Aviation Administration. David retired on September 1, 2007; but his career took him to assignments in Miami, Jacksonville and finally, Charleston.
Shortly after retirement, he began a six-year battle with lung cancer.
He is a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church, Mt. Pleasant.
He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Maudie Wehking; three sons, Christopher, Michael, and Thomas Wehking, all of Mt Pleasant; his father, Donald Wehking; sisters, Melissa Wehking, Beth Wehking Parks (Tray), all of St. Augustine; brothers, Steve Wehking (Laura) of Maggie Valley, N.C., Tim Wehking (Jennifer) of Martin, Ga.; nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.
David was born on July 2, 1956, in St. Augustine, and preceded in death by his mother, Diane Hoey Wehking. At a later date, there will be a celebration honoring Dago’s life. All friends and family will be welcome. A memorial message can be left in the guestbook.
