Historic City News was informed that an arrest was made this morning in the St. Augustine Shores neighborhood following two reports of attempted car burglaries around 4:15 a.m.
The first victim told deputies that his car was parked in front of his residence in the 600 block of Bahia Court. When the 52-year-old man noticed that the dome light of his vehicle was on, he went to turn it off; but, as he approached, the victim said that a younger man appeared and fled on foot towards Christina Drive.
During the investigation deputies located a second vehicle at another residence in the same neighborhood where the 58-year-old owner reported that someone had smeared feces on a side window of her vehicle.
Deputies searched the area, armed with a description provided by the first victim.
Deputy Thomas Bickhart observed a man riding a bicycle in the 400 block of Shores Boulevard. When he spotted the deputy, the man, later identified as 18-year-old Haralampos Othan Zaharias, jumped off the bicycle and ran into the woods.
Zaharias, who resides at 967 Manati Avenue, was located a short time later hiding behind a tree and was taken into custody without further incident. He was arrested on charges of loitering and prowling, possession of less than 20 grams of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Media Relations Officer Kevin Kelshaw told Historic City News local reporters that additional charges are pending further investigation. Zaharias remains in custody in lieu of bonds totaling $1,000.
