The River House, home to the St Johns Council on Aging, located at 179 Marine Street, has invited Historic City News readers to participate in the upcoming public events during the month of November.
If you are interested in a volunteer position with the Council on Aging, we have included in this report several available volunteer opportunities for you to consider.
River House Art Society – November 17
River House Art Society is for those interested in art, art history, artists, or anything art related. The next meeting will be Monday, November 17, 5:00-7:00 PM, River House, 179 Marine Street and will feature tips on framing art and pictures from your photo gallery. Light refreshments and a cash bar available. This event is open to the community. This group meets every other month at River House, 179 Marine Street and the next meeting will be on Wednesday, November 19, 12:00-1:45 PM. This group welcomes all visually impaired persons and their caregivers. Please contact River House Reception Desk at 209-3655 to RSVP.Dinner and a Movie
The River House people’s choice for November is “Serendipity” starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsal. Join us at River House, 179 Marine Street on Thursday, November 20, from 4:30-7:30 PM. Cost is $12 for River House Activity Members and $15 for Non-members and includes 1 soft drink, popcorn, and dinner. Beer and wine are available. Call 209-3655 for movie information and reservations. Reservations are required and must be made no later than Tuesday, November 18. Reservations may also be made for the December 18th showing of the classic, “White Christmas”
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
MEALS ON WHEELS:
Volunteers are needed to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors in the Fruit Cove area on alternate Mondays. We also need a volunteer to deliver meals in the Hastings area on Fridays.
Volunteers are need to package meals on wheels on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays.
COASTAL COMMUNITY CENTER:
A volunteer is needed to organize and facilitate short field trips for our senior participants – one weekday morning, every other month.
CARE CONNECTION:
Volunteers are needed to assist seniors in signing up online for the SNAP Program in the mornings from 9-12. Good communication skills as well as computer experience is preferred.
Volunteers are needed in the Minor Repair Program particularly in the Ponte Vedra and Fruit Cove area. Simple jobs only – training available. All material is provided. Work on your own schedule.
MEMORY ENHANCEMENT:
A volunteer is needed at the Fruit Cove Baptist Church on Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., or any time within those hours. Duties include assisting staff with activities and making coffee.
A volunteer mental health counselor is being sought to work with participants at the Shores United Methodist Church, Monday or Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m.
SUNSHINE CENTER:
Volunteers are needed to assist staff with activities and serving snacks and Fridays – 1-4 p.m.
