Civil Air Patrol Captain Dennis Maloney, reports to Historic City News that local Cadet Master Sergeant Roman Leone has been selected by the Air Force Association as the “Squadron Cadet of the Year”.
Leone is the son of Army Chief Warrant Officer Paul and Melanie Leone of St. Augustine. He currently attends Pacetti Bay Middle School and he will begin studies at the St. Augustine High School Aerospace Academy in September.
“I am very happy to receive this award,” Leone said, flanked by his parents at the award presentation. “I want to thank those who recommended me. I am very proud of the help and assistance everybody has given me since I joined the squadron.”
Saint Augustine Composite Squadron Commander, Major Ralph Aviles, explained that this award is given to the cadet who exhibits outstanding qualities in the areas of fellowship, leadership, self-discipline, and aerospace education.
Leone currently serves as a cadet flight sergeant for the squadron and he has been a leader in organizing numerous unit activities and training sessions. Since he joined the squadron in 2012 he has participated in summer encampment at Camp Blanding and Cadet Airman Academy for Group Two Florida Wing. He has also attended the U.S. Space and Rocket Center Aviation Challenge in Huntsville, AL, where he was twice given the Flag Award.
Cadet Leone is also a member of the squadron color guard and he has marched in local parades and participated at the Veterans Day Massing of the Colors. In January he was selected to represent the St. Johns County Schools in Washington, D.C. to lay a memorial wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and at the Washington Memorial. He has also completed over 500 hours of volunteer service at Mill Creek Elementary School.
