The luck o’ the Irish will be with you at the St Augustine St Patrick’s Day Parade, when lads and lasses from throughout Georgia and Florida, Savannah to Sarasota and beyond converge upon the Historic City, donning their best greens, for our local annual celebration of the Emerald Isle’s most revered saint.
Because it was seen as a form of rebellion, the wearin’ o’ the green was outlawed in 18th century England; in fact, wearing of shamrocks was a crime punishable by hanging.
“Patrick was born into a wealthy family and kidnapped from Roman Britain by Irish raiders in the fourth century,” Parade Coordinator Sherri Cunningham told local Historic City News reporters. “He eventually escaped, but returned in 432 to help Christianize Ireland. Irish folklore holds that St Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to explain the Christian doctrine of the Trinity to Irish polytheists.”
St Patricks Day parades are celebrated around the world and ours is a favorite part of the annual St Augustine Celtic Festival, and will commence on March 8, 2014 at 10:00 a.m.
There is still time to register and participate in the parade, Cunningham said.
