St Johns County is responding to a water main break that has diverted all SR-16 traffic in the area of Lewis Speedway, while St Johns County Engineering Department spokesperson, Jessica Hamburg, tells local Historic City News reporters that the 6700 block of CR-16A closed today, and will remain closed for repairs through August.
Both eastbound and westbound traffic on SR-16 is being diverted at this time. The detour eastbound is either Masters Drive (for those whose destination is south of SR-16) or San Sebastian View to Lewis Speedway for those traveling west. No estimate is being given for these emergency repairs.
Safety concerns raised by the size of an affected pipe being replaced as part of the repair of a deteriorated metal cross-drain culvert on CR-16A, as well as the size of the equipment required to complete the job, have triggered the temporary closure of the roadway.
In order to minimize the impact on residential traffic for the surrounding neighborhoods, the repairs are being completed during these summer months while school is out.
