Community Affairs Bureau commander, Charles Mulligan, reported to Historic City News that the investigation into the shooting of an armed man last night on SR-A1A South in St Augustine Beach is continuing by detectives with the Major Crimes Unit as well as the State Attorney’s Office.
St. Augustine Beach Police originally responded to a report of a despondent individual making suicidal threats at a residence at 497 Florida Avenue at 7:25 p.m.
Several St. Johns County Deputies also responded as back-up due to the nature of the call. Once on scene, officers from the Beach Police contacted the armed man, identified as 53-year-old Carey Lloyd Martin.
Martin indicated that he was going to comply and exit the residence to speak with the officers. As Martin approached the front door, officers observed he was armed.
Martin discharged the weapon and sustained multiple gunshot wounds when the deputies returned fire. Martin is listed in “critical” condition at UF Health in Jacksonville.
The two Deputies who fired the shots were identified as 39-year-old SGT Earl Edenfield, III who has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 13 years and 28-year-old Deputy Joshua Butler, who has been with the office for 1 1/2 years.
Both deputies have been placed on paid Administrative Leave, which is standard procedure in deputy involved shootings.
The subject was transported to Flagler Hospital and was then taken by air ambulance to U.F. Health in Jacksonville.
Additional information will be released when it becomes available.
