Arrest made in November 2014 hit-and-run

Historic City News reported Sunday November 23, 2014 that 26-year-old Madison Meyer had been run over by a vehicle that overtook him from behind as he operated his bicycle on Hilltop Road in St Augustine.

Thursday evening, an arrest warrant was served on a 21-year-old St. Johns County man, according to detectives with the Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit who had been compiling evidence and following leads on the case over the past four months.

The day following the crash, an anonymous tip came in that indicated a 2014 Kia Soul was involved in the crash. An address was provided on Prince Road where the vehicle could be located. Detectives went to the residence and found the vehicle covered with a tarp. The vehicle was seized and taken to the Sheriff’s Office Evidence Unit to be processed.

The investigation led to an arrest warrant naming Garrison David Highsmith who lived at 1022 Prince Road in St Augustine on charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death and tampering with evidence.

Highsmith was arrested on that warrant without incident and was booked into the St Johns County Detention Facility on bonds totaling $225,000.
