Just before midnight, in the wee hours of Thursday morning, Historic City News was informed of a fatal crash on CR-208, just east of Joe Ashton Road. St Johns County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the emergency 911 call, placed by the driver of the vehicle involved.
The driver of a 1996 Chevrolet pickup truck and a bicyclist were traveling in the same direction, east along CR-208 when the crash occurred, according to Commander Charles E. Mulligan.
After St Johns County Fire Rescue personnel arrived at the scene, they stabilized the patient and transported the bicyclist to Flagler Hospital with life-threatening injuries. A short time after his arrival, he succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash and died.
Detectives observed evidence the bicycle was equipped with reflectors; however, did not find any evidence to indicate the bicycle was equipped with lights.
Both vehicles have been impounded for further examination, Mulligan reported. The Investigation is ongoing and is pending toxicology results related to any impairment that may have existed at the time of the crash.
There were no reported independent witnesses to the crash at the scene. Anyone who may have any information regarding the incident is asked to contact the Major Crimes Unit by calling 904-824-8304.
Identification of the deceased is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin.
