Florida National Guard and Department of Military Affairs leaders in St Augustine have reported to Historic City News that they are well pleased with the budget allocations approved by Governor Rick Scott and the Florida legislature.
The 2015-2016 “KEEP FLORIDA WORKING” budget is significant in that it allows the Department of Military Affairs to continue improvements on armories throughout the state, provide funds for Guardsmen pursuing a higher civilian education, and maintain community based programs for youth and adults.
“We thank the Governor and the Legislature for their continued funding for the Florida National Guard’s Armories and Programs. Our Armories and Readiness Centers are among the best in the Nation thanks to their continued support,” said Maj. Gen. Michael A. Calhoun, the Adjutant General of Florida. “Sustainment funds for programs like About Face, Forward March and our Youth Challenge Academy will significantly benefit children, families, and the communities where they live.”
Maj. Gen. Calhoun is a gubernatorial appointee who falls under the command of the Governor. He administers both the Florida Army National Guard and Florida Air National Guard.
“The Department of Military Affairs is very pleased with the approved 2016 budget and will work diligently to ensure its proper utilization and execution,” added Col. Valeria Gonzalez-Kerr, Florida National Guard State Quartermaster. “This budget will help us sustain the nation’s best National Guard facilities and ensure our Soldiers, Airmen and Civilians continue to serve in a safe and productive environment.”
The Florida Department of Military Affairs is headquartered on Marine Street at St Frances Barracks in St. Augustine and operates two armories in St Johns County; the Mark W Lance Armory on San Marco Avenue and Robert F Ensslin Armory on SR-207.
“Let me say that it is truly exciting to know that our elected leaders continue to understand the very importance of our future leaders here at the Florida Youth ChalleNGe Academy,” said Sgt. Maj. (Ret) James Ransom, Florida Youth Challenge Director. “Their continued financial support of this exceptional program has successfully changed the lives of countless at risk young men and women throughout our state.”
