Despondent 28-year-old shot down by two deputies

A frightened woman’s voice called 9-1-1 around 4:30 p.m. to report that a resident in the Legends Condominiums was despondent and needed help.

Deputies raced to the location in World Golf Village, and upon their arrival, they entered the residence at Unit 207 in Building 225, Presidents Cup Way.

Two St Johns County deputies located the occupant; identified as 28-year-old Justin Edward Way, who reportedly was wielding a large, tactical machete.

During the confrontation both deputies discharged their service weapons, killing Way. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The two deputies have been placed on administrative leave; which is standard procedure while investigating a deputy-involved shooting. Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit are continuing the investigation at this hour and additional information will be released when it becomes available.
