Promoters tell Historic City News local reporters in St Augustine that the popular annual Biketoberfest events will attract more than 100,000 motorcycle riders and enthusiasts to Daytona Beach; spilling over into Flagler and St Johns County.
As with Bike Week each spring, the awareness of motorcycle riders does not seem to increase at the same rate as other motor vehicles operators who have to share the road.
“The stretch of A1A between SR-206 and Marineland continues to be deadly,” St Johns County District 3 Commissioner Bill McClure reported. “At approximately 10:00 p.m. tonight a two-motorcycle crash sent at least one person by air ambulance to Florida Hospital Flagler.”
McClure said he has asked the county to try to reduce the speed and install a crosswalk at Crescent Beach since 2012, but he hasn’t gotten any help.
Florida did away with its helmet law for motorcycle riders, and, to be sure, putting on their do-rag and their knees in the breeze is part of the experience of one of life’s greatest freedoms; but that experience comes at a price.
