About two-dozen stakeholders got an opportunity to see plans under consideration by the Florida Department of Transportation for one of the most controversial traffic boondoggles in the City of St Augustine; the intersection of San Marco Avenue and May Street.
Historic City News reporters attended the open house at the Holiday Inn on North Ponce de Leon Boulevard Tuesday afternoon where residents were asked to contribute their comments in support of efforts to alleviate congestion.
Engineers, planners, neighborhood activists, transportation professionals, city officials, and about eight representatives from FDOT exchanged ideas and challenged hypotheticals in an open format that included a brief presentation that started about 6:30 p.m.
Options expanded after the city purchased the former proposed 7-Eleven site on the north side of May Street. FDOT owns the vacant area on the south side, and city and county own property on West San Carlos along Davenport Park and the county library.
Current proposals include:
- Add a westbound left turn lane on West San Carlos to US-1
- Re-align May Street and West San Carlos creating one traffic light
- One-way West San Carlos going east – Dismukes Street going west
