A dozen artists were honored before a standing-room-only-crowd at the St. Augustine Art Association during the opening reception of the annual “Figures and Faces” exhibit according to an announcement received by Historic City News Friday.
Lisa O’Neil, a previous two-time winner of the prestigious Carl Steinsieck Award, judged the exhibition, which received more than 160 entries.
“All of the artists brought a unique vitality to their expressions of the human form,” said O’Neil. “It was a pleasure to judge this show because the subject matter breathes.”
The Carl Steinsieck Award for Best Figure Drawing was given to Sandra Maler, while the Lee Steinsieck Memorial Judge’s Choice Award, named in honor of the philanthropist who passed away last month, was presented to Ryan Flannery of Vilano Beach.
Cynthia Pierson’s “Handyman” won the Ann James Memorial Award for Best Pastel Portrait.
Susanna Richter-Helman won the Jean Wagner Troemel Best in Show prize for her large-scale pastel portrait entitled “Self Contained.”
A native of Colorado and resident of St. Augustine, Richter-Helman has exhibited her works in California, Texas, New Mexico, Jacksonville and St. Augustine at the contemporary Plum Gallery, among other venues.
Eve Albrecht of Jacksonville was awarded first place for “Bundled Up,” an oil portrait.
“Mother and Child,” a clay relief by Linda Bobinger from Georgia, received the second place prize.
Deborah Thompson of St. Augustine won third place for “Continental Drift,” a colored pencil collage, and Roann Elias garnered fourth place for “Riveted,” a mixed media collage.
Four Honorable Mentions were awarded to Beth Bright, Marcia Pappas, Sandra Norton and Teri Tompkins.
Elyse Brady told local news reporters that admission to the exhibition is free and may be viewed at the St. Augustine Art Association located at 22 Marine Street.
Hours are Tuesday – Saturday, noon to 4:00 p.m. and Sundays, 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. through March 1st. Visitors should use the Charlotte Street entrance due to ongoing construction.
