Historic City News learned this morning that a $42 million modification has been approved to a previously awarded Department of Defense contract that will bring jobs to the Northrop Grumman aircraft integration “Center of Excellence” in St Augustine.
Maintenance and support services for more than forty F-5 Tiger aircraft will be performed in St Augustine, with a small fraction of the work will be performed in Springville, Utah, and Emmen, Switzerland. The supersonic light fighter was initially designed in the late 1950’s by Northrop Corporation.
“We are looking forward to providing repairs, overhauls and engineering support for the Navy and Marine Corps Reserves who fly these 44 aircraft,” Christine McGlade, vice president of manufacturing operations, and site manager of the St Augustine plant, told reporters.
Services for the aircraft also will include inspections of structural components necessary for safe and reliable operations.
The project is expected to be completed within a year.
