Although the position is not yet listed on the governor’s appointment website, St Johns County Commissioner Cyndi Stevenson officially left office at the conclusion of Tuesday’s regular meeting.
Stevenson is a Republican; and, William Korach, Chairman of the St Johns County Republican Party, says he’s expecting that Republican Governor, Rick Scott, will appoint another Republican to fill the vacancy as soon as possible.
“I know Governor Scott will have some strong candidates to choose from to complete the remaining months of my term,” Stevenson, who prevailed in last month’s Special Republican Primary Election for Florida House District 17, told Historic City News.
Prospects for the position, with its $70,068.51 annual salary and benefits, must complete an online questionnaire.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and other agencies participate in the vetting process.
“I have spoken to the Governor about my successor,” Stevenson said today. “I have made myself fully available to Governor Scott as he continues to consider the hopefuls.”
Stevenson has held the office since November 16, 2004.
Chairman Korach may be contacted by the governor for a recommendation, however, several local Republicans have already mentioned their interest in the seat to him and other members of the Republican Executive Committee.
During the Special Election, Stevenson defeated John Capra for the District 17 House Seat. Capra, an attorney, has indicated his interest in the seat. Brian Iannucci, who lost to Stevenson two years ago for the District 1 Commission Seat, addressed the Republican Party last month — he announced his interest at that time. Kim Kendall, and at least two others are believed to have their hat in the ring.
Since there will be no election to fill the vacant seat, Republicans are being asked to write a brief recommendation in support of their choice for county commissioner and send it by e-mail to: appointments@eog.myflorida.com
