Iconic St Augustine exhibit debuts May 1

St Augustine’s most revered artists will be honored in a special Main Gallery exhibition of works from the St Augustine Art Association Permanent Collection, and Historic City News readers are invited to attend the opening Friday, May 1, from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with a presentation slated for 7:00 p.m.

“Iconic St. Augustine” showcases paintings by such noted artists as Emmett Fritz, Frances Howatt, Courtenay Hunt, Walter Yeomans, Celia Reid, Joseph Jeffers Dodge, William L’Engle, Dick Zayak, Jean Wagner Troemel, Don Taylor, Charles Dickinson, Jean Light Willis, Beau Redmond and others.

“During this 450th anniversary year, we wanted to recognize the artists who have established St. Augustine as an American art colony,” said Executive Director Elyse Brady. “We’re especially excited to unveil the designs of the new works that will be permanently installed in our sculpture garden. They will transform St. Augustine’s public space in a monumental way.”

Selected works on loan from area collectors will supplement the exhibition, along with a special display of miniature replicas of St. Augustine’s historic buildings by woodworker Leonard Ruel.

The opening reception features live music by Mary Jane Ballou, harpist and radio personality, and violinist Sue Cryan. The evening will culminate in the unveiling of the TOUCH St. Augustine Art Garden sculpture designs and the drawing of the $5,000 Viking River Cruise prize ticket.

The St. Augustine Art Association is located at 22 Marine Street. “Iconic St. Augustine” will be on display in the Main Gallery through June 1. Admission is free. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday, noon to 4:00 p.m. and Sundays 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
