King Felipe VI will address the US-Spain Council this evening; a high-level annual meeting of men and women who Historic City News has previously reported to represent some of the major leaders of business and government in Spain and the United States.
The meeting alternates between the two countries, but, tonight’s affair will be held at Flagler College.
In a published quote by Richard Goldman, the president and CEO of the local Visitors and Convention Bureau described the King and Queen’s visit “as a coup”.
Isabelle Rodriguez, president and CEO of the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce, was also quoted to say, today’s events were “an opportunity you don’t get every day.” Rodriguez went on to describe the US-Spain Council as “a high-level networking group.”
Before that engagement, however, King Philip VI & Queen Letizia made a special gift presentation to the City of St Augustine of the city’s Spanish founder, Pedro Menedez de Aviles. Mayor Nancy Shaver graciously accepted the gift on behalf of all the residents of St Augustine. “This is quite a treasure for us,” Shaver told local news reporters today.
At noon today, King Felipe VI, who became king last year after his father abdicated, addressed citizens gathered in the Plaza de la Constitution from the “King’s Balcony” at Government House.
An earlier visit to Castillo de San Marcos National Monument was announced by the Public Affairs department of the City, but was later cancelled over nonspecific security concerns. The Castillo visit still went off without a hitch and provided local Colonial Spanish re-enactors to meet and shake hands with the Royals.
