At about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday evening, Historic City News was alerted to a vehicle-vs-pedestrian crash on US-1, northbound, near Target. The victim, 34-year-old Robert James Taylor, who has been living in St Augustine since moving from Fitzgerald, Georgia, was pronounced dead on the scene.
Charles Richard Salyer 61 of St. Augustine, was driving a 2004 Jeep Wrangler, traveling north on US-1 in the outside lane. Salyer’s passenger was 66-year-old Martha Ann Butler, also of St Augustine.
Taylor attempted to cross the northbound traffic lanes from the center median and traveled directly into the path of the vehicle. The driver struck the pedestrian in the outside lane.
Blood tests have been ordered to determine if alcohol played a role in the single-vehicle traffic fatality. Charges are pending the results of the autopsy investigation and toxicology reports.
