On Friday March 6th, the Men of Menendez reported to Historic City News that they will hold a warning march, to alert the populace of the impending attack by Searle’s Buccaneers.
The march, starting at 4:30 p.m., is free and open to the public as it travels down St. George Street; beginning at the Cathedral Basilica and proceeding to the Lion’s Seafood Festival at Francis Field. The soldiers will protect those in attendance from dastardly pirates out to steal the food.
Then, on Saturday March 7th, the action continues.
From 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. the buccaneer encampment will be open to the public free of charge at the Fountain of Youth (Encampment Area Only! Entrance at south gate)
At 4:30 p.m. the buccaneers will emerge onto the Plaza and chase the retreating Spaniards down St. George Street into their wooden fort (Santo Domingo redoubt), just as they did during Searle’s Sack of St. Augustine in 1668.
After the battle, the re-enactors will be available to pose for pictures and answer questions about the actual event.
This year the public will have the opportunity to test the transparency of the new “Cubo Line wall”, built on one of the last remaining open sites in the city on which re-enactments can take place in a somewhat historical context.
