Among other agenda items this evening, the City of St Augustine Beach commission will select the commissioner to serve as mayor and vice-mayor for the coming year, and Undine Pawlowski George is telling her constituents she would be honored to serve.
In a public e-mail from Commissioner George, she explained that voters at the beach do not elect the mayor, the way they do in the City of St Augustine. Voters at St Augustine Beach vote on their choices for city commissioner, at large, in a non-partisan election. Then, each year, the elected commissioners decide among themselves who will serve in those leadership positions.
“For those that don’t know how mayor & vice mayor are each selected: the five commissioners select a mayor and vice mayor each year with a two year maximum for mayor,” the commissioner wrote. “While I would wholeheartedly accept the Mayor position, and am ready to do so, it is not up to me, or the voting public, to decide.”
The process at the Beach is most similar to that of the St Johns County Board of Commissioners, where voters do not select the chairman.
George went on to say that she will continue to “happily serve our community for the next three years of my term — as mayor, vice mayor or as commissioner.”
Acknowledging that the decision will be made by the five sitting Commissioners, George said that during the first year of this term, she has received “an increased amount of vocal support from citizens asking me to serve as Mayor”.
In her e-mail, George pointed out that no veto or special powers are held by either the appointed mayor, or vice-mayor, generally.
The mayor chairs the regular and special meetings of the city and has signatory responsibilities on official documents. Otherwise, she described the title as of little importance. The City has a strong City Manager form of government.
Meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. at City Hall Commission Meeting Room located at 2200 A1A South in St. Augustine Beach, FL 32080.
