Theodore Roosevelt medals awarded to Naval Sea Cadets

Petty Officer 1st Class Nolen Johnson and Petty Officer 1st Class Hudson Shaw were each awarded the Theodore Roosevelt medal during the September meeting of the St. Augustine – Palm Coast Council of the Navy League of the United States.

Historic City News was informed that both cadets are members of the St. Augustine Naval Sea Cadet Battalion, led by LTJG Eric Johnson.

“Cadets awarded this prestigious medal are chosen by their adult leaders in the battalion,” said Ensign Bill Hamm, St Augustine Naval Sea Cadet Battalion and VP of Youth Affairs for the St. Augustine – Palm Coast Navy League. “The Navy League Youth Medal was established to honor those who best exemplify Roosevelt’s values of energy, spirit, competition and fair play.”

The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a federally sponsored non-profit civilian youth organization for young people, ages 11 through 17. They are comprised of a senior and junior cadet program. They are sponsored by the Navy League of the United States and supported by both the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard.

“The Sea Cadet program is crucial to instilling leadership, developing good citizens, team building and promoting an environment for our young people that rewards hard work, dedication, educational achievement and personal accomplishments,” said St. Augustine-Palm Coast Navy League Council President Bill Dudley.

“As an official youth organization of the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard, the program educates its members in America’s rich oceanic traditions and teaches them the values of professional seamanship,” said Hamm. “The training received in the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps helps to shape capable and competent Sailors and Officers for our maritime services.”
