Florida Highway Patrol traffic homicide investigators informed Historic City News local reporters that New Year’s Day turned deadly in a single car crash on US-1 at Gun Club Road.
At about 1:40 p.m. Friday afternoon, 62-year-old Jacksonville resident Charles G Williford was traveling south on US-1 driving a 2005 red Dodge pickup truck.
When Williford reached Gun Club Road at the north end of Northeast Florida Regional Airport at St Augustine, the vehicle veered off the roadway, through a ditch, colliding with a concrete utility pole.
St Johns County Fire Rescue responded to the scene, however, the driver was killed in the crash.
Investigators have yet to determine the reason the driver lost control of his truck.
