Historic City News provides technical resources to the interns who assist with the mayor’s website and social media pages as well as coordinate with residents who want to participate in various community activities such as “Coffee with the Mayor” and the neighborhood “Walks with the Mayor”.
“I am excited to meet and be working with Sophie Nowell this summer,” Mayor Shaver told local Historic City News editor Michael Gold this week. “Sophie is home with her family for the summer, fresh out of her first year of college, and she is bringing new energy, excellent ideas, and sharing her many creative talents for the benefit of our city.”
Sophie moved to St. Augustine 4 years ago with her family and graduated from Pedro Menendez High School. She has gone on to double major in Political Science and Economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she is involved with the Alpha Kappa Psi business fraternity, as well as the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority.
She sought out a summer internship to acquire hands-on experience working on a political campaign, and she’s enjoying every minute of it! She’s been keeping busy helping out where she can with Mayor Shaver’s re-election activities and waitressing at a local restaurant.
In her free time, she enjoys lazy beach days and morning runs with her black lab, Jax.
Sophie says she has already learned a lot this summer and is looking forward to continuing her internship until returning to UNC in the fall.
