Service commemorates fallen law enforcement officers

The men and women of the St Johns County Sheriff’s Office will hold their annual Law Enforcement Memorial Service to honor local fallen officers Friday morning.

Historic City News readers are welcome to join St Johns County Sheriff David Shoar in memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, protecting the citizens of our community in our hour of need.

Each year Shoar says he wishes there would be no new reason to hold the memorial service. But then, each year he finds that it is inevitable. “Even if there were no new casualties, we still owe a continuing debt of gratitude to those men and women who served with distinction and honor; laying down their own lives to protect us from danger,” Shoar said.

The ceremonies will commence tomorrow, Friday May 6th, at 9:30 a.m. If you plan to attend, the service will be held in the Memorial Courtyard, located at 4015 Lewis Speedway in St. Augustine, in front of the main entrance to the department.

POLICE MEMORIAL DAY EVENTS IN FLORIDA

• The Florida Sheriffs Association honored all of the state’s dead officers Monday in Tallahassee.
• The annual Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office Police Memorial Day Tribute to Fallen Officers ceremony was held Wednesday morning, May, 4, 2016 in front of the Police Memorial Building. The 61 officers who have died in the line of duty dating back to 1840 were recognized with current JSO offers and surviving family members of the fallen officers on hand.
• The Clay County Sheriff’s Office has its own memorial today at its headquarters at 901 N. Orange Ave. in Green Cove Springs.
• The Nassau County Sheriff’s Office will have a combined service for its deputies, Fernandina Beach police and Florida Highway Patrol troopers at 10 a.m. May 17 at its headquarters at 76001 Bobby Moore Circle in Yulee.
• National Police Week ceremonies include the 35th Annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service at 11 a.m. May 15 at the U.S. Capitol.
