The Florida Highway Patrol reported to Historic City News that at about 8:00 p.m. last night, 18-year-old Griffin Richard Moody of Ponte Vedra Beach lost his life in a two-car-crash that occurred on SR-16 at Murabella Parkway.
Today friends are mourning the loss of Moody, who was the fourth passenger in a 2005 Ford Focus traveling westbound on SR-16, driven by 18-year-old Meghan Elizabeth Theobaldt of St Augustine.
Theobaldt slowed to turn left across the highway onto Murabella Parkway. She failed to react to a 2010 Nissan Frontier that was approaching eastbound on SR-16, pulling directly into its path.
The Nissan t-boned the Focus on the passenger’s side, killing Moody and seriously injuring Theobaldt and her two other passengers, Mary E. Crean and Claire D. Crean; both 18-years-old and both from St Augustine.
The driver of the Nissan Frontier was 20-year-old Weston Michael Power of St. Augustine; his passenger was 19-year-old Tresca Lynn Esguerra, also of St. Augustine.
Both vehicles came to final rest on the south grassy shoulder of SR-16. Survivors were transported to Baptist South, UF Health, and Flagler Hospitals. All occupants of both vehicles were wearing seat belts, and alcohol is not believed to have played a factor in the crash.
Charges are not final and the investigation is still continuing.
