Witness the Changing of the Flags at the Castillo

Chris Leverett reported to Historic City News this morning that the National Park Service will re-enact the 1763 “Changing of the Flags” between the Spanish and the British on Saturday, May 14th at 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument.

Visitors will see the changing of the guard, the massing of the Spanish and British Troops, the exchange of the keys, and the changing of the flags, all for the price of regular admission to the park.

The event will be carried out by re-enactors portraying Spanish and British soldiers. Re-enactors dressed in the traditional clothes of the period will also be present representing the townspeople throughout the day.

The Castillo de San Marcos National Monument is the oldest fortification in the continental United States; a unique specimen of Spanish military architecture and engineering, related cultural resources, and their architectural, political, and social history.

Park rangers and volunteers of the Castillo and Fort Matanzas National Monuments, and the St. Augustine Garrison, are sponsoring the day’s activities.
