Is permanent Daylight time in Florida’s future?

Posted on 02/16/2018 By Historic City News

Daylight-saving time will start March 11 this year and end November 4; but, what if we didn’t have to keep changing back-and-forth each year and got to enjoy more daylight after work all year long?

The Florida House on Wednesday overwhelmingly approved a proposal aimed at observing daylight-saving time year-round in the state, Historic City News has learned.

House members voted 103-11 to support the measure (HB 1013), filed by Rep. Jeanette Nunez, R-Miami, and Rep. Heather Fitzenhagen, R-Fort Myers.

Daylight time has always been popular in our area because there are so many entertainment and social opportunities for locals and tourists who would be able to stay out later in the sunlight. The benefits for businesses who cater to tourists are obvious. Moving to daylight-saving time could help the tourism industry.

A companion bill (SB 858) is moving through the Senate. If approved by the Legislature, the proposal to shift to year-round daylight-saving time would depend on congressional approval.
