A special one-day tour of many of the sites related to St. Augustine’s rich literary history will be conducted Saturday, April 4, as a fund raiser for the Friends of the Libraries of St. Johns County and the St. Augustine Record’s Newspaper in Education program.
The tour will be conducted by St. Augustine historian David Nolan who was recently recognized with a Governor’s Point of Light Award for his work in identifying and preserving the African-American history of St. Augustine. A successful author of The Houses of St. Augustine and Fifty Feet in Paradise: The Booming of Florida, Nolan’s tour is sure to stimulate interest in the area’s literary history – a subject that will take center stage at the Florida Heritage Book Festival to be held September 11-12 in St. Augustine.
Among the highlights of the tour will be a visit to the former Vilano Beach cottage of Sinclair Lewis, the first American to win the Nobel Prize for literature and a visit to the former home of Pulitzer Prize-winning author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. While at the Rawlings home in Crescent Beach, tour participants will enjoy a Florida-style grouper and grits luncheon along with a beautiful ocean view.
The tour will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on board an air-conditioned tour bus provided by Old Town Trolley Tours. The tour is limited to 24 participants. Tickets for the tour and luncheon are $75 each and can be reserved by contacting Kathy Dvornick at 904.940.0194.
The Florida Heritage Book Festival is supported in part by a grant from the St. Johns County Tourist Development Council.
