Writers in Residence Program at Flagler

Flagler College announced to Historic City News that they will welcome novelist Masha Hamilton as part of its Writers in Residence Program on February 24th at 7:00 p.m. in the Gamache-Koger Room at the Ringhaver Student Center on Sevilla Street.

Hamilton is a novelist and former foreign correspondent and will read a selection of her work. As a journalist, she worked for the Associated Press, reporting from the Middle East, and for The Los Angeles Times and NBC/Mutual Radio, reporting from the Soviet Union during its final years.

Hamilton is the author of four acclaimed novels, most recently “31 Hours,” a Washington Post selection for one of the best novels of the year and an Indie Choice pick by independent booksellers.

She is also the founder of two world literacy programs: the Camel Book Drive, begun in 2007 to supply a camel-borne library in northeastern Kenya, and the Afghan Women’s Writing Project, begun in 2009 to foster creative and intellectual exchange between Afghan women writers and American women authors and teachers.

Hamilton is the recipient of the 2010 Women’s National Book Association Award, which is presented annually by WNBA to a living American woman who derives part or all of her income from books and allied arts, and who has done meritorious work in the world of books beyond the duties or responsibilities of her profession or occupation.

A Brown University graduate, Hamilton has been awarded fiction fellowships from Yaddo, Blue Mountain Center, Squaw Valley Community of Writers and the Arizona Commission on the Arts.
