During the regular meeting of the St. Augustine City Commission last night, reporters from Historic City News watched as Dr. Robert B. Hayling was selected to be honored with the deAviles Award.
The commission also gave approval to a marker to be installed at King and St. George Streets, recognizing Civil Rights leader Andrew Young; whose “Crossing in St. Augustine” documentary will receive an Emmy later this month.
Hayling led the local Civil Rights movement, while Young was a leader in the national effort.
Both men were attacked and beaten, and both are being honored for their sacrifices. Young was attacked in June, 1964, at the location memorialized by the marker.
