According to an article that appeared in the St. Augustine Report that was received by Historic City News this morning, building projects in downtown’s historic district continue to advance even in this slow economy.
The Historic Architectural Review Board (HARB) continues to keep its watchful eye on historic integrity.
Current projects include a reroofing on Avenida Menendez, and renovations to two buildings and plans to build another along St. George Street. All are within Historic Preservation Districts, regulated by HARB.
The board recently denied replacement of a terra cotta tile roof with more modern concrete tile on the former Casa de La Paz on Avenida Menendez, now a private residence – the owner will appeal to our City Commission – and tabled for more detail applications for renovations to facing buildings on St. George just south of Hypolita Street, and a reprise of the Bishop’s Building at St. George Street and Cathedral Place.
Permitted work has already begun on the former Ancient Mariner and Bags by Edith buildings on St. George. All the projects require certificates of appropriateness by HARB.
Noteworthy is that residential units are returning to our historic district – the original intent of preservation districts to provide residential and commercial mixed uses. The Bishop’s Building plan includes a 16-18 unit boutique hotel, while two apartments are planned above the retail space in the former Bags by Edith building.
