Historic City News Editor Michael Gold was one of hundreds of air show spectators watching helplessly as a plane crashed during the second annual Warbird Fly-In at the Flagler County Airport on SR-100 in Palm Coast.
A single-engine Yak 52 doing an aerobatic exercise crashed and burst into flames at about 4:30 p.m. this afternoon, killing the pilot. Flames erupted from the crash site immediately after the plane went down, at the edge of the Flagler County Airport.
The pilot was flying in formation with other planes when he plunged to the ground. Officials said they think the pilot was killed on impact; there was no apparent reaction when the plane started to dive to the ground.
Police have not released the name of the pilot who died, pending notification of family. No one on the ground was hurt.
Fire officials said the crash caused a 1-acre brush fire.
It has been reported that, despite today’s tragedy, tomorrow’s Fly In will continue as scheduled; however, no aerobatics will be performed.
