The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine reported to Historic City News that they will officially open the Jubilee Year for Priests on Friday, June 19, 2009 at 7:00 p.m. with Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and the celebration of Vespers.
The first day of the jubilee will be celebrated on the feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Pope Benedict XVI promulgated the Jubilee Year for Priests in March of this year. The Jubilee coincides with the 150th anniversary of the death of Saint John Vianney, patron saint of parish priests. In announcing the observance, the Pope stated his desire that priests be encouraged to “spiritual perfection.”
Father Thomas S. Willis, pastor of the Cathedral Parish, will be the celebrant and homilist for the liturgy. Everyone is invited.
The Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine is located at the corner of Cathedral Place and Saint George Street in downtown St. Augustine.
