St. Johns County Sheriff David B. Shoar told Historic City News that the authentic, original fingerprint card taken in 1964 from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., at the time of his arrest, will remain in St. Augustine, over some objections.
On Tuesday, April 26th, at Excelsior Cultural Center on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, the sheriff will present the historic artifact for display as part of an exhibit that will include video interviews with the arresting officer and a companion civil rights demonstrator.
Dr. King was arrested after attempting to eat in the dining room of the Monson Motor Lodge on June 11, 1964.
Shoar told Historic City News, “Some people thought we should send the card to Atlanta, but it’s our history – good, bad or indifferent, it’s a story that happened here.”
