After leaving St. Johns County on Monday, April 25, 2011, Historic City News learned the “Flame of Hope” of the Law Enforcement Special Olympics advanced through Flagler County Wednesday; as deputies there continued the next leg of the Torch Run.
Wearing white shirts with the torch run’s trademark, the deputies ran almost four miles from Town Center to the steps of the Flagler County courthouse.
At the courthouse, Rick Look, Chief Deputy for Flagler County Sheriff Donald W. Fleming, accepted the torch and passed it on to David Hariton, liaison for the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.
The symbolic torch will be passed by law enforcement agencies from county to county until it reaches the Disney World of Sports complex. Special Olympians from throughout Florida will be participating in sporting events at the complex next month.
“It was an honor to pass the torch on behalf of the Sheriff’s Office,” said Chief Deputy Look. “I especially enjoyed meeting some of the athletes.”
The Torch Run is an actual running event in which officers and Special Olympic athletes run the “Flame of Hope” to the opening ceremonies of state games.
In Flagler County, Sgt. Gerry Ditolla organized the event and planned the route which took participants from the Town Center area west to the courthouse.
On the courthouse steps, Flagler County Circuit Judge Dennis Craig and Flagler County Judge Sharon Atack congratulated the participants. Each expressed their appreciation for the support that the local Special Olympians received in this year’s run.
