Community Affairs Coordinator, Sergeant Charles E. Mulligan, reported to Historic City News that a fire in northwest St. Johns County yesterday, has rekindled today — sending plumes of smoke and ash high enough in the air to be seen as far away as Mandarin.
“At this point, we are still dealing with a woods fire that started by a lightning strike yesterday,” Mulligan told Historic City News.
Florida Division of Forestry has been called in to manage the blaze; aided by firefighters from St. Johns County Fire Rescue.
“The fire has burned about 50 acres,” Mulligan said. At about 5:00 p.m. today, the fire was about 90 percent contained.
Mulligan told news reporters that no homes are in danger from the fire; however, neighborhoods are close-by.
“Deputies are blocking traffic on Greenbriar Road — between State Road 13 and Roberts Road,” Mulligan reported. “The fire is located south of Greenbriar Road near Bartram Trail High School.”
